Protein Powder Supplement Breakdown
Animal Protein-based
Whey
- Great all around/general use protein. (Most popular, by far).
- Concentrate vs. Isolate
- Milk derived (so may not be best for those with lactose intolerance).
- You get what you pay for, but don’t over pay on fancy “hydrolyzed” or “platinum” powders. Most are over-kill for the average person.
Casein
- Sometimes called “milk” protein, since it makes up most of the proteins in milk.
- From the “curds” in milk.
- Longer lasting–takes around 6 hours to completely breakdown.
Beef
- Pretty solid protein.
- Not very sustainable.
- Creatine and Carnosine normally found in whole food beef is not added back in to the processed powder.
Egg
- One of the “original” protein powder supplements.
- Good choice for lean, cholesterol-free protein.
Plant Protein-based
Soy
- One of the more popular types of protein, especially among females. (Don’t worry fellas, NO conclusive evidence has been found linking phytoestrogens [estrogen hormones from plants] to lowering testosterone/raising free estrogen in the body).
- Good for baking. (The raw, unflavored power sucks it for making protein shakes).
Hemp
- Includes all 8 essential amino acids organically.
- Very environmentally friendly
- Great for baking or making into shakes.
- Unfortunately, the THC HAS been removed.
Rice/Pea/Bean
- Rice protein is usually found mixed with bean or pea proteins to form a “complete” protein source.
- Tastes a little earthy in our opinion. (Like kissing an unwashed hippie chick).
Beer Review: Bold City Brewery’s (Jax, FL) Killer Whale Cream Ale
- Good “all day” drinker.
- Suitable for your “non craft beer” friends.
- 5.5% ABV
- Around $8-$9 (Publix, ABC).
Food Truck Review: Sweet City Gelato (Orlando, FL)
- Super-incredible gelato featuring locally sourced ingredients.
- Serves gelato, sorbetto, and special dessert creations (seasonal).
- Amazing service, great product.
